Post Update: February 14, 2081

I FINISHED the quilt on February 12 but it took until today to get it on the bed so that I could take a photo.

Original posts for February, 2018:

I wish I could say that I have finished my quilt, but I'm getting closer at least!  This past weekend I got the layers basted and now I have started the quilting process.  I've already made the binding, so it will be ready to attach as soon as I am finished quilting.  I'm using large swirls on my Handi-Quilter Sweet Sixteen.  The swirls are made through ruler work using a template from Sparrow Quilts that allows the presser foot to ride in the grove.  I'm not very good at it yet, since I seem to have trouble holding it in place while maintaining a good quilting speed and moving that large quilt around.  I also can't figure out how to make the second row of quilting nest well with the one I've just done.  There's a definite learnng curve.  However the thread is light beige, the pattern is simple, and from a distance, those inconsistencies don't seem to show!

I added three strips around the edges to make a border so that the quilt will fit my bed better.

I've made this label and it is shown here on my backing fabric.

This is the ruler template I am using.  The ruler foot rides in the channel (if you can hold the template firmly enough) and when you get to the end, you leave the needle in and turn the template around to keep going.

I spray basted with 505 temporary fabric adhesive, using my fold-out work table.

As usual, I had some "help" from Wilbur.

On Friday, February 9, I finished quilting.  Over the weekend I hope to attach the binding to the front, and then hand-sew the binding to the back during the coming week.  (I added a few extra swirls here and there.)

Lizzy is glad she no longer has to fight for a space on the Hand-Quilter, since the quilting is done and she has good access again.  I have now even gotten the binding applied to the front and am ready to start hand-sewing the binding to the back of the quilt.

Post Update - February 18, 2018

A folded new quilt is a perfect place for Lizzy to nap in the sunshine that we've seen very little of in the past several months.

On Ringo Lake - Moving right along!

Clues and the reveal started flying in fast and furiously after the last clue!  Now all the instructions have been given, but for this quilter at least, it's going to take some time to get this quilt finished.  Be sure to click on the link at the bottom to see the progress other quilters have made because some are already FINISHED!  I don't see how they did it.  It's a good thing it isn't a race!!

I have finished clues 6 and 7, a good part of clue 8 (which is to assemble the main blocks,) and I've made the setting triangles, sashings, and cornerstones that will enable all the blocks to become a quilt.  My furry helper Wilbur is almost always on the scene and is occasionally joined by the other two helpers.

As of January 13, I had finished my blocks and made a start on assembling the "on point" design for the quilt.

Wilbur didn't want to be an active participant today, so he took a nap in the sunshine coming through the sewing room window.

Whew....putting this together is taking a long time.  I am loving it, though, and will even take time to put borders on it so that it will be a better fit for my bed.  It won't be finished until there are five blocks across the top and bottom and six blocks down the sides.  (At least, I THINK that's what it will be!)

Wilbur decided to help a bit with the layout.

Carole D's Clue 5

On Ringo Lake Clue #5

I got half of this week's clue done before Christmas, with my usual help from Wilbur.

I had gotten the pieces cut and organized the day the clue came out.

As I started piecing, Wilbur guarded my scissors and tried to keep the Flying Geese units from flying away.

I finished the units in this clue on Christmas afternoon.

Clue 4

I had a lot of help finishing Clue 4, which made it take longer than it should have, but the helpers were good companions in any case.

When I began cutting, Wilbur had to organize and guard my pieces.

During the piecing process, Lizzy had to keep the sewing machine under control.

Once  Lizzy was sure that the machine was working correctly, Wilbur had to sit in my lap to be sure I was putting the units together correctly.

I guess it's good that Salem didn't feel the need to add her help this time!

Clue 3 - Friday, Dec. 8

Clue #3

There are many of these units to make.  They will slant in two different directions so I have to be very careful when I cut.  I will be using my new Simple Folded Corners ruler by Doug Leko because I haven't had a chance to try it out yet.

I have all my rectangles and squares cut and I have loosely paired them in preparation for cutting the corners with the ruler.

I made several samples of the unit in each slant direction to be sure I understood the difference in ruler placement for the cutting.  Then I decided to do all the ones for one direction before doing any more in the other direction.

I was sidetracked by the big Georgia snow that started on Friday. While it does snow here in northwest Georgia, this was an early one for us.  It also left us with more snow than we've had at once in a long time!  I measured over 10 inches piled up on my hard surfaces outdoors.  That's twice as much as we've had at once since I moved to this area over 15 years ago.  Our area is heavily wooded and limbs and tree started falling as the snow built up.  We lost power late Friday afternoon and didn't get it back for over 22 hours, so that took away a big part of the time I planned to sew!

This is as much as I have been able to complete so far.  I will continue sewing during the week and hope to be able to finish before Friday and the next clue.

By Wednesday night I had completed the rest of Clue 3.  Now I will have a day to catch up on everything around the house before I start Clue 4!

Clue 2 is underway!

It will probably take all week to finish this step, but my pieces are cut and the process is underway.  As usual, it's happening under close supervision from Lizzy who will actually sit there while the machine is sewing!  Then we were joined by Wilbur.

Here is my progress by the end of the weekend.  I still have a lot to do!

And finally, on Weds., Dec. 6, clue 2 has been completed.

On Ringo Lake

Beginning "On Ringo Lake"

Here are the fabrics I am beginning with.
I will add and take away as the mystery progresses.

Tentative beginning fabrics

These are my neatly stacked nine-patches from clue 1.

Lizzy really wanted to supervise the process.
